This is a triptych, displaying all three panels at once. In the left panel, a woman squats, holding a book, on which stands a man holding an umbrella. Another standing woman looks over her shoulder at it. In the center panel, an older man is seated on a bench with a brush or pipe in his hand. A woman looks at him over her shoulder. In the right panel, two woman stand with two girls. One of the girls is half hidden behind the woman on the left and gesturing forward. The other girl looks up at the two woman. In the background are white flowering trees as well as some calligraphy.<br /><br /> This is a set with 1948/1.185 and 1948/1.186.<br /><br /><br />

This Luba Kabongo work depicts a half-figure wearing a striated mask, known as a <em>kifwebe</em>. Decorated with kaolin (white clay) and black pigment, the anthropomorphic mask features a round, convex forehead, a vertical ridge running down from the forehead and forming the nose, long, narrow eyes, and, a wide, rectangular mouth. A highly dense fringe of vegetable fiber encircles the wooden face, completing the mask. A shirt stitched of monkey skin covers the figure’s body and existing arm (one arm has broken off); the uncarved hand is exposed and resembles a paddle. Interestingly, the arms have been designed to be movable, suggesting that this may have been used as a puppet.

A stylized rendering of a human face with long narrow nose, round eyes set close to bridge of nose, and open, ellipitical mouth. The head is carved in shape of a coiffure that resembles a helmet which extends down the sides of the head. The head is topped with a high arched sagital crest. Patina is dark brown in color with traces of red and blue pigment. Sheet metal cut in circles and long strips embellish the top of the head.
